At Sandhill Farm we are involved in all aspects of natural farming, utilizing sustainable practices, biodynamic rhythms, organic and biointensive methods and permaculture principles to grow and provide a diverse array of annual/perennial vegetables, fruits, grains, herbs and flowers for our CSA, direct markets and local food banks. We remain committed to connecting people directly to farmers, to food, to earth.

Guiding us, our core philosophies embrace ethical and ecological land stewardship with a reverence for all life. We strive always to consider the greater good, and actively engage our actions on the farm toward giving more than taking. We honor keen observation and listening. We plant also for nature, pollinators and beauty. We focus on garden health and vitality, rather than concentrating on disease and pests. We value human power and empowerment. We support economy of scale. We believe in sharing knowledge.

We farm organically in intensively grown raised beds. Utilizing natural rhythms and sustainable practices we farm in a way which we feel infuses the food we grow with vital life force and nutrient density. We are small, which allows us to be dynamic, responsive, efficient and effective. Practical applications include resource and water conservation. We focus on building soil through composting, cover cropping, crop rotation and seasonal/succession planting. We are committed to diversity and seed saving and plant only open pollinated heirloom seeds. The fruits of some of the seeds we save and plant have fed our community for at least a century. To extend our planting/harvesting seasons, we use a greenhouse and hoop houses. As needed, we employ the use of appropriate technology. We love human power—the beauty, function and ecology of hand work and hand tools. We also use a walk-behind tractor for necessary bed work and occasionally, a tractor for field preparation, cultivation and peripherial work. Our laying hens free range during the day, and move about the land in a chicken tractor. We attune to universal signs and rhythms, and consult biodynamic and lunar calendars for planting and cultivation.

March and April plantings are energized with major summer croppings. Peas are flowering; beans, squashes and cucumbers are climbing trellises; potatoes push through the mulch; tomatoes, eggplants and peppers rise up through the rye and vetch. The prospering of such farms requires the committed support of local folk who share responsibility for ensuring availability of vital, quality, organically grown food; people who demonstrate a willingness to eat what is in season locally, and cease to demand what we want when we want, no matter the sacrifice or costs. Locally supported organic agriculture is instrumental in the removal of long transport, storage, preservatives and pesticides, reducing costs to the planet, while significantly increasing food quality, diversity and nutritional value. In a sustainable community, we are equally responsive and responsible for our mutual well being. We share the risks and benefits. A strong and sustainable local agriculture enables a strong, local economy and community.

http://www.sandhillfamilyfarm.com/content/7026

CSA subscription garden plan

Our small family farm provides biodynamically grown, organic produce to folks in our local community. We consider this service to our subscribers a partnership, where risks and benefits are shared. From our work, we strive to balance community service with providing a viable income for our family. We honor this opportunity and feel this mutual support is vital to the well being and interdependence of individuals and community. We also feel that "knowing" who grows your food, where and how it is nurtured, substantially increases your connection with the earth mother and to the dynamic food you eat.

Our baskets are filled with a diverse and nutritious selection of fresh organic vegetables, fruits, herbs and flowers, locally grown, hand picked and packed the day of delivery. We grow with the seasons; so, what is in your basket is dependent upon the season: the leafy greens, the roots, the fruits and the flowers are all presented naturally in season. Contents of the baskets are consistent for each subscriber; we do not customize subscription baskets. However, individual requests/orders for additional produce are available first to our subscribers. While offering many basic vegetables, we are committed to the reintroduction of old, traditional, heirloom and open pollinated varieties, which have been saved and cultivated for centuries. The revitalization of diversity in farming is necessary and healthy for our gardens and livelihood, along with the well being and sustainability of small seed banks and plant ecosystems globally. This also keeps our weekly offerings a discovery for the palate. Included in the basket is a weekly value-added product, such as jam, sauce, relish, salad dressing, healing salve or soap. We recycle all baskets, jars, containers, bottles involved in our production, and we ask that subscribers return these materials each week when they receive a new basket.

How many people one subscription serves depends upon personal consumption. Households of two and households of four have found the same size basket equally fulfilling. Depending upon the season and weather conditions, contents of the baskets will vary; but overall, exceptional quality, quantity and consistency are maintained. For individuals and smaller households, we offer the option to receive a basket every other week. Where income is a limiting factor, we offer work study/exchange. With the gift of good weather and fertile conditions, we can reasonably anticipate continuous weekly delivery 8 or 9 months of the year, with a resting period around late July to mid-October. Temporary suspension of delivery is available for reasons of necessity (vacation, emergency, out of town), but must be prearranged. In this event, we also offer the option of donating your basket to a local charity or group of your choice.

Subscription garden costs include an annual farm fee and a weekly charge for your basket of produce. The annual, nonrefundable fee of $200 - $350 (sliding scale) helps to seed and support the yearly operation and ongoing of the farm. This fee is the same for full or partial subscriptions. For those who subscribe to our service once we are into the season, a prorated fee is applied. The farm fee should be mailed with your application to establish membership and may be paid in 2 equal monthly installments. Weekly cost for each basket of produce is $40. Payment for weekly baskets is made (by mail or in person at the market) on a monthly basis in the first week of each month of delivery. This arrangement minimizes bookkeeping. We realize circumstances vary from person to person; so when necessary, individual/weekly arrangements can be made.

Our produce is carefully harvested and packed to ensure freshest delivery. We currently deliver to Gainesville at the Downtown Farmers' Market each Wednesday between 5 and 7 pm. If you prefer, you may pick up at the farm in Micanopy after 5 pm on Wednesday or any time on Thursday but please prearrange. Private deliveries to other locations can be arranged for a small fee.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to call. If you are interested, we have subscribers who are willing to talk with you from their point of view. If you would like to subscribe to our service, please complete an application. We welcome your commitment and willingness to support sustainable, local agriculture and economy, through small family farms.

Blessings from the earth,
